![]() ![]() The room was average size and had a nice bathroom. I thought that the hotel itself was quite ugly in their decorating, but it was comfortable. The hotel is only a couple of years old and very modern. This was definitely the way to do it because we didn’t feel any jetlag the next day. We got to the hotel, had dinner at their restaurant (it was good, but not cheap!), relaxed in the hotel for a couple of hours and went to sleep early. If we were to go back, I’d take the bus because it was an express bus, so it took about the same amount of time as the taxi and was a lot cheaper. Our friends who were on a later flight took the bus-paid about 2 or 3 euro a person. I think he overcharged us, but we were just too tired to argue. We took a taxi to the hotel and it was about 18 Euros. We also knew that there wouldn’t be time or we’d be too tired to do any sightseeing in Athens when we got there. We were flying out the next morning for the islands, so we wanted to stay as close to the airport as possible. We chose this hotel because it was only 10 minutes from the airport and much less expensive than the Sofitel which is adjacent to the airport. ![]() We took a taxi to the hotel, the Holiday Inn on Attica Avenue. We sat here on our way back to the US, and the legroom was much better, and the seat just slightly bigger, so it was much more comfortable overall.Īthens (Night 1) We arrived in Athens around 5 pm, and this really was perfect timing. One thing I would recommend is that if you’re flying coach on United, to try to get seats in the Economy Plus section. We are already thinking about what islands to visit next time!įlight We flew on United and Lufthansa from DC to Germany and then on to Athens. If you’re thinking of going to Greece, you should definitely do it. Your suggestions helped SO much and our trip was almost perfect!Īll I can say is WOW! I knew that Greece was going to be beautiful, but it really exceeded my expectations. The same places which unfortunately are too far away for a sailing trip starting from Athens can be added on a itinerary that starts from Paros. Thanks to everyone who answered my many questions about this trip. And then during the time on board they can reach many places that are on their ‘wish-list’. Like this, people can easily and quickly get from Athens and other islands to the embarkation point. This is exactly why we have decided to move our base in Paros. The same applies for other islands around. So once you sail out at Paros you will be at Naxos in about 2 and a half hours. So you get right the heart of the Cyclades just so you have to start the return trip as soon as you get there.īut starting the sailing trip in Paros you are only 16 nautical miles away from Naxos. For this, 3 more long days will be needed to get back to Athens. ![]() And once you’re there, you’d be visiting one more island in the area and then you need to start making your way back. To cover this, you need 3 days with an average of 5-6 hours each day. A sailboat travels with around 6-7 knots ( miles / hour) so in order to get from Athens to Naxos a sailboat would need to travel about 15 hours (plus the detour to stop at the islands on the way for overnight). The distance Athens – Naxos is about 100 nautical miles. Let’s take for example Naxos which is always a favorite among our guests. “Why do you say a trip starting in the middle of the islands so much better?” you might be wondering. ![]()
